Cass's son Jack was planning the ride for a school project. He wanted something genuinely tough, to raise money for Cancer Research — his great-grandfather has gastric cancer, and Jack has seen that experience up close. Around the same time, our partners at WardWilliams Creative had been talking to us about doing something meaningful in the charity space, supporting causes that matter to us personally. Add a lockdown itch we badly needed to scratch, and a long Zoom conversation about our shared love of Ronin — the De Niro spy thriller — and the idea came together. Cass and the_Lab's Director of Special Projects, 'Bishop', had done this route once before, a decade earlier. They were honest with Jack about what that meant: five days over 200km, including a 260km stretch past Ben Nevis and Loch Ness they call "The Highlands Beast," and over 2,600m of climbing on day one alone out of Cornwall — Everest and a half in total across the week.
